The Getai In Singapore

The Getai is a cultural heritage of the Chinese in Singapore.

'Getai', in Chinese, means 'song stage'. Usually held in the heartlands on makeshift outdoor stages, it showcases performances that are different from contemporary stage concerts with staples such as stand-up comedians who deliver their humor in Chinese or dialects (mainly Hokkien) and singers of all ages dressed in a wide array of dazzling costumes that are essentially colorful and glittery.

The comedians, together with local and foreign singers from countries such as Malaysia and China, take to the stage to entertain the masses during special occasions such as the Chinese New Year and Hungry Ghosts Festival. The latter is perhaps the Asian version of the Western Halloween.

There is no need to understand the language used by the comedians and singers to enjoy a Getai performance because their body language and vocal dexterity will suffice to keep the audience engaged. Besides seasoned veterans with impressive vocal ranges and fresh-faced debutants, there is the occasional singing teacher and the man who sings duets alone.

Often, there would be song requests and dedications from the audience and the singers would usually oblige impromptu with their unique renditions. The comedians connect with their listeners with topics of current interest and on social issues such as the controversial casino developments, prostitution, spousal fidelity, (online) gambling addiction and loan sharks. That is what makes the Getai an accessible experience.

To appreciate a piece of authentic Singaporean culture, venture out of the city into the heartlands to catch the Getai, a not-to-be missed event.
